Not only does ROI serve as a justification for effort, but also a necessary piece of the planning process for the project. They also had more focus for test planning and test case/script development, and achieved more goals then those that did not.
It must not calculated for a comparison between a manual test and automated test is wrong.
- They are not the same and do not provide the same information about the application-under-test.
- It must be calculated for each independent purpose.

저자는 manual test와 automated test는 서로 replace할 수 있는 대상이 아니기에 둘 간의 효율을 ROI로 비교하는 것은 meaningless하다고 설명한다. 저자는 ROI를 계산해서 automated test를 수행하기에 앞서 다음 의견을 제시한다.
- 즉시 효과를 볼 수 있다면 automated test방안을 선택하라.(?)
- manual test로 수행할 수 없다면 automated test방안을 선택하라.
- automated test가 반드시 필요하다고 생각되고 누군가에게 이를 반드시 설명해야하는데 그 노력이 크다고 생각된다면 ROI를 계산하라.(ㅡ.ㅡ seems to be kidding)
- 만일 automated test를 해야만 한다면 기존의 manual test에 대한 ROI를 계산해서 다른 area에 대해서 resource를 활용할 계획을 세워라.
